Is it bad to seperate guinea pigs?

My brother and I both have guinea pigs and we've been puting them in the same cage for a while, but we've now decided to seperate them because the cages get messier alot slower. But the problem is my brothers guinea pig wont stay quiet now that they're seperated. Will someone please help me?
